Istanbul, Turkey (Constantinople)

What can I say, Istanbul has been one of my favourite cities so far. The romanticism, the history, the food, the people, and the beauty…  SPECTACULAR! This city was once referred to as Constantinople and was the last stop on the Orient Express from Paris.  I can see why this city was chosen as the last stop on that luxurious and romantic train. The white sea gulls flying over the Hagia Sophia, fresh roasted chestnut carts, the cobblestone streets, the Turkish teas (Apple is my personal choice), the Turkish baths, and the colorful shops make for a perfect romantic holiday with your love.  The list of Istanbul’s must see activities is lengthy, so I would allow for several (3-4) days. Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern, Chora Church, The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii), The New Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, and the Hagia Sophia should not be missed.  Fantastic views of the entire city, both the European and the Asian side, can be seen from the Galata Tower. Also, history buffs will never be bored with the never ending information about the Roman, Byzantine, Latin, and Ottoman times in Constantinople’s past. Walking the city is both easy and enjoyable, but Istanbul also has a tram and a metro which are both easy to use, cheap, and efficient.  For the foodies out there, turkish cuisine is a delight. I personally enjoy the Mediterranean, Balkan, and Middle Eastern influence, especially the yogurt and spices. And that bread! Window watching the professionals prepare Pide and Yulfka is an experience in itself. Top off any delicious meal with Baklava! You can’t go wrong with walnut or pistachio. The many hookah bars of the old city can make for a late night of relaxing and gazing at the illuminated sights of Istanbul. To sum it up, Istanbul has something for everyone!
